About
Hi, I'm Bess McCoy, a dedicated communicator with a passion for clean water and the St. Louis community. Growing up at the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers, I’ve come to understand the critical role of clean water in building and nurturing a thriving community. I take pride in engaging my fellow St. Louisans in protecting this vital resource.
At the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District (MSD), I've had the opportunity to connect with community and media partners, all while championing responsible water stewardship. As the Manager of Public Affairs at MSD, I've led essential communication initiatives like the Fats, Oils, and Grease education campaign and the Know Your Zone flood awareness program. My skills in strategic communication, media relations, and public speaking have prepared me to serve as an MSD spokesperson, ensuring fair and accurate news coverage of our city's clean water efforts.
My commitment to clean water extends beyond St. Louis, and I am honored to serve as the co-chair of the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) Communications and Public Affairs Committee. Working with fellow water utility communication professionals, I contribute to shaping clean water policy communication across the nation.
My passion for water stewardship is not only driven by my professional pursuits but also by several personal hobbies that wouldn’t be possible without clean water. For over a decade, I've volunteered with the Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri's Mariner program, teaching young women valuable water-based skills such as sailing, canoeing, swimming, and water safety. In the summer, you can find me at Carlyle Lake crewing on sailboats. And as a Certified Bourbon Steward, I love exploring the world of bourbon—a hobby that wouldn't be possible without clean water.
Beyond my clean water pursuits, I serve the St. Louis community as a board member and public relations lead for the St. Louis Mardi Gras Foundation. In 2023, my media efforts helped our city's biggest celebration reach 141 million people locally, with an ad equivalency of $4.2 million.
I believe that the power of community engagement, combined with innovative communication strategies, can lead to transformative outcomes for clean water initiatives and the communities I serve. By fostering meaningful relationships, encouraging collaboration, and staying dedicated to continuous learning, I strive to create a lasting impact in my community and beyond.
